Another young man had his leg amputated after being shot at by police in Tarash upazila of Sirajganj on October 27.
The victim, Faisal Ahmed Biplab, 34, is undergoing treatment at National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics Rehabilitation in the capital.
Biplab alleged that personnel of detective branch of police in Sirajganj along with some locals had demanded Tk 10 lakh from him. As he refused to pay them the money, police picked him up and shot him in the left leg on the night of October 27.
The police, however, said that Biplab was a miscreant, who abducted a trader for ransom and was shot at after he tried to flee when the police went to rescue the trader, Golam Mostafa, 60.
Police also arrested two of his cohorts – Hafizul Islam and Enamul – after an abduction case was filed with Shahzadpur police station, said Sirajganj police officer-in-charge Nasiruddin.
Physicians at NITOR said that Biplab was hit by several birdshots in his left leg and he had to have the leg amputated.
Biplab, a former sepoy of Bangladesh Army, said that two trader of Sirajganj – Golam Mostafa and Mobarak Hossain – had been known to him for over a year. They visited him at his village home at Lalpur of Natore with an offer to buy a mango orchard.
Mostafa told Biplab that his son Shariful Islam was waiting at a market in Tarash upazila and asked him (Biplab) to go there to collect the money.
‘As I went there, DB policemen led by OC Nasir cordoned me and asked me to pay Tk 10 lakh as ransom. Otherwise, they said they would show me arrested in a case,’ claimed Biplab.
‘I protested and said that I would take legal action against them. Then the police in plain clothes picked me up blindfolded in a microbus. A few hours later, they dropped me in a quiet place and shot me in the leg’, the victim added.
Biplab was rushed to Sirajgani Medical College before being shifted to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital.
Physicians there referred him to Dhaka’s NITOR where his left leg was amputated on November 2 in police custody.
The police even did not inform the victim’s family about the matter despite his request. Later, he informed his mother about it thought other patients there.
Sirajganj DB officer-in-charge Nasiruddin, however, said that Biplab had abducted the trader on his way to the market on October 20. Two days later the kidnappers demanded a ransom of Tk 50 lakh over phone from his family.
Detective police went into action after receiving the complaints from the trader’s son and trapped and nabbed the abductors.
They tried to flee after noticing police in Maheshrohali area, where they went to take Tk 10 lakh on the evening of October 27. Police fired shots in which Biplab was injured and two others were detained.
The victim brushed aside the allegation saying that the DB men had shot at him in conspiracy with Golam Mostafa and his son Sharif after he refused to pay them money and warned of legal action.
He said that the abduction case was file with Shahzadpur police station on the night of October 27 and he was shot at on the same night. It suggests that police filed the case in a planned way to hide their misdeeds.
The plaintiff Sharif also gave contradictory accounts about the abduction incident. In the first information report, he said that a person named Mobarak, who was known to Mostafa, had abducted his father and demanded ransom. But talking to New Age, he said that they were sure that Biplab had kidnapped his father and demanded ransom.
The victim said that Mostafa was in jail in a murder case and plotted the entire drama with the help of police to hide their offence.
